Delta wins over Kellogg CC in a closely contested match
University Center, MI – The Delta College Men's Basketball Team showed true grit in Tuesday night's matchup, taking down a strong Kellogg Community College squad. Kellogg entered the game 5–1 out of the MCCAA Western Conference, while the Pioneers came in looking to bounce back from a 1–3 start. Delta needed this win—and delivered.
The first half was a back-and-forth battle, with Delta heading into the break up 45–42. Sir Real Smith led the Pioneers with 14 points in the first half, followed closely by Amari Taylor. Delta drew nine fouls from the Bruins and shot just over 60% from the free-throw line (7–11), while going 18–38 from the field.
The second half told a different story. Delta moved the ball extremely well, racking up 15 assists while committing only eight turnovers. They also controlled the glass, pulling down 18 rebounds in the half—10 of those from Amari Taylor alone. The Pioneers forced 13 Kellogg fouls and capitalized at the line, shooting 15–21 (71.4%).
Delta's offense caught fire, outscoring Kellogg 55–44 in the final 20 minutes to secure a 100–86 victory. Jaylen Carthan came off the bench and lit it up with 23 points, with Sir Real Smith adding 21. Taylor finished with 17, and Brandon Bossert added 10. Carthan also led the team with nine assists.
For the game, the Pioneers shot an even 50% from the field (35–70), 68.8% from the free-throw line (22–32), and 33.3% from beyond the arc (8–24). Defensively, they were locked in—collecting 28 defensive rebounds and 35 total.
Delta put together their most complete performance of the season, showing toughness, balance, and momentum heading into their next contest.
