Delta College softball played a hard-fought split against Mid Michigan College, dropping the first game 4-3 before rallying for a 2-1 win in Game 2 behind a clutch performance on the mound and timely late-inning execution.
Game 1: Mid Michigan 4, Delta 3
In a game defined by small margins and costly errors, Delta came up just short in the opener.
The Pioneers jumped ahead early with a two-run second inning, highlighted by a two-RBI single off the bat of Megan Mankey. Mid Michigan responded with a three-run burst in the fourth, fueled by a pair of Delta miscues and a two-run single by Phoenix Shaw.
Delta tied things up in the fifth on a fielder's choice, but the Lakers edged back in front with the go-ahead run in the seventh—ultimately proving to be the difference.
Pitcher Geena Gauthier went the distance, allowing four runs (all earned) on seven hits while striking out six. She received little help from the defense, as Delta committed three errors on the day.
Offensively, Alicia Candelaria led the way with two hits and a stolen base. Mankey, Chinavare, and Lathrom also added hits in a balanced effort.
Game 2: Delta 2, Mid Michigan 1
Delta bounced back in the second game, grinding out a 2-1 win thanks to lights-out pitching from Eliana Rodriguez and a game-winning RBI from Kennady Tiitola.
Mid Michigan struck first with a run in the opening frame, but Rodriguez settled in quickly, tossing a complete game with zero walks and just one earned run allowed on five hits.
Delta tied it in the fourth, then completed the comeback in the bottom of the seventh. With runners on, Tiitola came through with a well-placed grounder to drive in the winning run and secure the walk-off win.
Rodriguez faced 25 batters in her seven-inning effort, efficiently navigating the Laker lineup with the help of solid defense and smart pitch selection.
