Delta College Dominates Fourth Quarter to Defeat Montcalm Community College 71-42
SIDNEY, Mich. – A dominant fourth-quarter performance propelled Delta College to a 71-42 victory over Montcalm Community College on Wednesday evening. The Pioneers used a 30-5 scoring advantage in the final period to break open what had been a competitive contest through three quarters.
Delta got off to a fast start, leading 14-7 after the first quarter. However, Montcalm responded in the second, outscoring the Pioneers 20-10 to take a 27-24 halftime lead. The Pioneers regained control in the third quarter with a 17-10 edge before completely pulling away in the final 10 minutes.
Griggs Leads the Charge Ja'Leeah Griggs spearheaded Delta's offensive attack, scoring a game-high 18 points while adding four rebounds and six steals. The Pioneers capitalized on Montcalm's offensive struggles, forcing 23 turnovers and converting them into transition opportunities.
Jefferson Dominates the Boards Hailee Jefferson was a force in the paint, recording a double-double with 11 points and a staggering 21 rebounds. Her dominance on the glass contributed to Delta's 52-30 rebounding advantage. Kayla Howell added 10 points, while Carah McCrum dished out six assists to go with eight points.
For Montcalm, Emily Putnam led the way with 15 points and eight rebounds. Makenna Rautio contributed 8 points and 11 rebounds, but the Centurions struggled to find offensive consistency, shooting just 21.8% from the field.
Turning Point: A Fourth-Quarter Surge Delta's suffocating defense and transition offense completely overwhelmed Montcalm in the fourth, as the Centurions managed just five points in the final frame. The Pioneers shot 36.4% overall but made up for it with hustle plays and second-chance opportunities, securing 17 offensive rebounds.
