Lady Pioneers Defeat Jayhawks 79-71
University Center, MI - The Delta College Women's Basketball team defeated the Muskegon Jayhawks 79 to 71 on a cold Wednesday evening.
Delta College set the tone early, outscoring the Jayhawks 42-29 in the first half. The Pioneers' offense clicked from the jump, shooting 50% from the field in the first quarter and maintaining a steady lead through the break. Their defense was equally impressive, holding Muskegon to 0% from beyond the arc in the second frame.
The game took a dramatic turn in the third quarter. Muskegon exploded for 28 points. The Jayhawks briefly narrowed the gap, but Delta regained their composure in the fourth, outscoring the visitors 22-14 to seal the deal.
The Pioneers saw contributions across the board, with three players scoring in double digits:
-
Brooke Swartz: Led the way with a team-high 18 points, while also facilitating the offense with 7 assists.
-
Aya Mosley: Provided a massive spark off the bench, contributing 14 points on 6-of-16 shooting.
-
Makayla Watkins: Dominated the paint, recording a double-double with 13 points and a team-high 13 rebounds.
-
Damaya Hartwick: While quiet in the scoring column, she was the primary floor general, dishing out 5 assists.
The difference-maker in this contest was depth and rebounding. Delta's bench outproduced Muskegon's significantly, and the Pioneers won the rebounding battle 46-41. Despite a shaky night at the free-throw line (50%), Delta's ability to generate high-percentage looks (30-78 FGM) kept them in the driver's seat.
